HARIJAN SEVAK SANGH

Founded by Mahatma Gandhi in the year 1932

EXISTENCE
- Immediately after Mahatma Gandhi’s epic fast in the Yerwada Prision, in sept, 1932. The fast aroused the conscience of the Indian people, especially the caste-Hindus, against the evils of untouchability. It was a result of this awakening that the Sangh was born, taking a leading part in the crusade against untouchability.

Spread over 27 acres of land in the historic Kingsway Camp area in north Delhi, the ashram of HSS has a towering "Dharma Stambh" and a beautiful but faded "Sarwa Dharma Sambhav Temple", both of which were constructed under the supervision of Gandhi ji.

Headquartered at Kingsway Camp in Delhi as mentioned above, with branches in 26 states across India.

Prof. Sankar Kumar Sanyal is its current president from April 2013 onward.

OBJECTIVES - To eradicate untouchability, improve the standards of life of brothers and sisters of the community through education and vocational training.
Harijan Sevak Sangh, born out of the historic Poona pact between mahatma Gandhi and Babasaheb Ambedkar in 1932.

The Harijan Sevak Sangh is an independent ,national level non-profit voluntary organization

It branches all over India working for Harijan or Dalit people and upliftment of scheduled castes.

The Sangh helped the depressed classes to access public places such as temples, schools, roads and water resources, also conducted inter dining and inter caste marriages.

It constructed and maintains several schools and hostels across the country.

ACTIVITIES -THEN

NEED FOR "NIRMALA DESHPANDE NILAYAM"

Harijan Sevak Sangh has intended to construct “Nirmala Deshpande Nilayam” which will serve the same purpose as SRS Sarvodaya Girls Hostel. This aims at providing underprivileged girls with accommodation, quality education and occupational skills to empower and equip them for an enhanced life. The SRS hostel building is 63 years old now and is in a poor state. The students are required to be shifted to a nearby school during rainy season as it can’t withstand even a minimal rainfall.
